Friday Floral – Globe Thistle

When planning weddings in Colorado it is easy for us to be inspired by the wild flowers and succulents growing across the front range. One that many find as a pain in their yards here but I love in wedding florals is thistle, particularly Globe Thistle. Take a look to see how easy it is to incorporate this into your wedding day flowers.

Globe thistle looks even between when it begins to flower as shown above.

This is typically purchased in bundles of 10 stems so I enjoy using it in many different aspects throughout the day. But if this is a flower that our bride has fallen in love with we like to use one or two flowers only in her bouquet and her grooms boutonniere to separate them from the rest of the wedding party.

When it comes to selecting boutonniere flowers it is important that you find a few that can withstand long hard hugs with all of the family members before and after the ceremony. When using a flower such as Ranunculus I love the style but we really hesitate to put it onto the groom until right before the ceremony because it can easily come right off after the first bear hug he gives.

The globe thistle heads are typically about 1-2″ across which makes them just small enough for a boutonniere. Anything that has too many flowers or is too much can be distracting in photos.

When planning the color pallet of a wedding it is easy to incorporate this flower for the soft blue tint it has, it isn’t over powering. This flower peaks during the summer months into early fall and once your wedding is complete they dry very easily for you to keep for years to come.

One aspect that both of these arrangements show is the fact that the stems of Globe thistle can reach about 18″ tall which makes it great for all or short arrangements.

Globle thistle has a different look than Eryngium which I appreacite. I think that it has a clean style because there is not any thistle like leaves sprouting at the top by the head of the flower. Another term for this flower that you may have heard in the past is Echinops. Be sure to chat with your florist if this would be a good fit for you!
